1. Model of HMS Victory
This early-20th century waterline model of HMS Victory is believed to have been constructed from the ship’s timbers by the artist Harold Wyllie (1880-1973).
Wyllie, who was the eldest son of the noted marine artist William Wyllie (1851-1931), became an expert in marine archaeology and was appointed to restore Nelson’s famous flagship to her Trafalgar condition.
This fully rigged model with silver sails was commissioned to be used as a table centrepiece by Adam Wood of Skeldon House in Ayrshire. It was subsequently acquired by the vendor’s grandfather when the estate was sold in 1926.
According to Wyllie’s letters, the model was exhibited in the Royal Academy in 1912 “as a piece of sculpture before ship models were prohibited from their galleries”. He also states that he was given the timbers from Victory by Admiral Sir Christopher Cradock (1862-1914).
The model is estimated at £4000-5000 in a maritime sale at Bearnes, Hampton & Littlewood in Exeter on August 14.

2. Alison Watt screen print
Among the lots in the Contemporary & Post-War Art auction in Edinburgh on August 15 at Lyon & Turnbull, is a signed screen print, 'Narcissus' by Alison Watt (b.1965), which is inscribed 'For John'. The 2ft 1in x 20in (63 x 51cm) work is estimated at £300-500.
Modern and Contemporary artists from Alison Watt and Frank Stella to Kenny Hunter and Eduardo Paolozzi will be included from the property of the late John Calcutt (1951-2018) at Lyon & Turnbull.
Calcutt was a teacher, writer and critic who started his career in the arts reading history of art at Edinburgh University from 1969 and then the Courtauld Institute of Art. He was leader of The Glasgow School of Art’s masters programme from 2007-16.

This one-off chest of drawers by the British cabinet-maker Alan Peters (1933-2009) will go under the hammer at the Cheltenham saleroom of Mallams on August 15 with an estimate of £3000-4000.

Influenced by Japanese design, the walnut, tropical olive and cherry wood chest of drawers with black iron handles was a commission piece for a Cheltenham client in March 1982 and is being sold with the original sketches, invoice and correspondence. The piece was also displayed at the Furniture in Context exhibition at the British Crafts Centre in London in 1982 and a magazine clipping of an article that describes the piece is included with the lot.
Peters has been hailed as a ‘pillar of British furniture design in the late 20th century’ and one of the few direct links with the Arts & Crafts movement through his apprenticeship with Edward Barnsley. Estimate £3000-4000.

Craig is one of a handful of women who owned silversmithing workshops in the 18th century. The widow of John Craig, a partner of George Wickes who died in 1736, she operated on her own until 1740 when she entered in to a partnership with John Neville. Her business was located at the corner of Norris Street, Haymarket, London.
Women were often active in Georgian silversmithing shops until marriage but it was typically only on the death of a husband that they would they be given the opportunity to enter a mark with the Goldsmiths company. Estimate £1000-1500.

This 1950s Avery Hardoll petrol pump is one of two that carry estimates of £4000-6000 each at East Bristol Auctions on August 16. Both were originally from the Workman Garages in Coronation Avenue, Bath, and stood together from 1952 until they were purchased by the vendor in 2009.
They were ordered together and have sequential serial numbers. The pair have since been sympathetically restored, one with an original BP globe, the other with the globe and livery of Shell.
