Phillips
Olivia Thornton has joined Phillips as head of the 20th century and Contemporary art department in London.
She was previously at Sotheby’s for 12 years where she was most recently senior director in the Contemporary art department.
At Phillips she will report to Jean-Paul Engelen and Robert Manley, worldwide co-heads of 20th century and Contemporary art.
Prior to joining Sotheby’s in 2006, Thornton worked for the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, assisting with exhibitions on Jackson Pollock, Constantin Brancusi and the Pietszch Collection.
Dix Noonan Webb

London auction house Dix Noonan Webb has introduced a dedicated Russian Coins and Historical Medals sale to its calendar. The first will be held on September 17.
Tim Wilkes will lead the auction and said a key highlight is a collection of Russian historical medals, mostly formed in the 1960s-70s, including coins from the reigns of Peter the Great and Catherine the Great.
He added: “The coins and medals depict many of the significant figures and key historic moments in Russian history and date from the 14th century to the 21st century.”
Among the examples to be offered at the new Dix Noonan Webb auction will be this rare silver medal depicting the Coronation of Catherine the Great (1762-96) from 1762, by T Ivanov and GC Waechter. It carries an estimate of £3000-4000.
Alderfer Auction
Jonathan Castner
Alderfer Auction has hired Jonathan Castner as sports collectables specialist.
He will help the Pennsylvania auction house attract consignments for its next Sports Collectables Auction scheduled for September 5.
The firm said Castner has been a sports memorabilia appraiser with National Appraisal Consultants since 2011 and he first worked in collectables when he was a sales associate at New Jersey auction house Castner Estate Service, which had been founded by his grandfather.
