Writing in the Ukrainian arts magazine Antikvar, which Butterwick guest edited this month, he described how the paintings, with a value of €10m, were seized by Russian tax authorities. Although this was claimed to have been a response for unpaid taxes, Butterwick believes it could be a punitive step taken by the Russian authorities after the owner took Ukrainian citizenship.

A joint exhibition on Bohomazov takes place at TEFAF Maastricht, opening tomorrow, staged by Butterwick and Modernism Inc.
