Nazeing Glass Works, between Broxbourne and Nazeing on the Hertfordshire Essex border has closed following plans to redevelop the land.

The factory has been producing glass from the site since 1928 when it was started by Malcolm Pollock-Hill.

It has been in family ownership since, and Malcom’s son Stephen Pollock-Hill has run it with his wife Samantha. Their children Talitha and Robert Pollock-Hill were also involved with the business.

Light

An example of a light from Nazeing Glass Works.

The glass pressing and glass blowing factory is well known for its wares, supplying industrial glass for pavements, bulkheads, wall blocks, railway signal lenses, marine and ship lighting, aircraft and airport runway lenses, street and display lighting and corporate giftware as well as homewares from glasses to bowls.

Talitha said: “We have an amazing team at the factory but our numbers have dwindled from our heyday of 1978 when we had 174 employers and reduced to 11.

“We owe them an enormous debt of gratitude for their incredible work ethic and sunshine attitude. Many employees started at the factory straight out of school at 17 to learn and master a craft. Our glass certainly shows that they did just that, becoming master craftsmen in their own right.”

Talitha said a number of famous glass blowers, throwers and pressers have links to Nazeing including Geoffrey Baxter of Whitefriars, Ronnie Stennett-Wilson of Wedgwood and Frank Thrower of Dartington.
