Written on a single album leaf, they were made in Göttingen in 1808, or soon thereafter, by Carl Friedrich Gauss, the mathematician and astronomer who in 1801 had made his name with the publication of his Disquisitiones Mathematicae. He then successfully predicted the orbit of the even larger asteroid that is now designated a minor planet, Ceres.
