Sue Haines, who runs a one-woman bespoke antique/vintage furniture, restoration and upholstery business in Oxfordshire, said: “My first Vauxhall market in March was very successful both in terms of sales and future commissions.
“There’s a great vibe at this new market and an energy that was refreshing and encouraging for traders offering something unique to the public.”
Knight said: “There were a thousand-plus through the door. It was a good day for the dealers. Great success in terms of high-quality traders and footfall with positive feedback from both trade and public.”
Held in The Workshop in Whitgift Street, London SE1, in the former fire engine workshops of the London Fire Brigade, the next Vintage Vauxhall Market is on Sunday, April 9.
Based in Somerset, Liz van Hasselt is a well-known textiles dealer who curates the textiles and vintage fashion auctions at the Bristol Auction Rooms, with an upcoming sale on Thursday, April 6.
Focusing on textiles, Van Hasselt writes the popular Washerwoman blog and stands regularly in the textiles tent at IACF Newark.
With her husband Jack van Hasselt, who buys and sells European linens, they will be staging the small West Country Fabric & Textiles Weekends in the village hall at Lydeard St Lawrence near Taunton, which is an attraction for textiles dealers countrywide. The next Lydeard textiles event will be on Saturday and Sunday, April 8-9.
Back in 2010, Judy Berger had a lightbulb moment when she saw a gap in the market for what has now become a serious interest in affordable vintage furniture and homewares.
So she launched the Vintage Furniture Flea which visits London once a month and travels to Leeds, Bristol, Oxford and Manchester.
Berger also runs her Affordable Vintage Fashion Fairs up and down the country which incorporate furniture and homewares into the fairs. ‘Wear it, sit on it’ is the message to shoppers.
The next South London Vintage Furniture Flea, where the picture, above, was taken of three happy customers with their finds at a previous event, is at Balham SDA Church, 69- 71 Elmfield Road, London SW17 7BW, on Sunday April 9, 10.30am-4.30pm.
Alan Lowe and Sarah Moss both own vintage businesses in Stockport and seven years ago they launched the monthly pop-up Vintage Village in the town’s Grade II-listed Victorian Market Hall, with the next on Sunday, April 9.
This continuing success story, with around 70 dealers every month, is “very well visited with 1500-2000 visitors each time”, said Lowe, owner of the village, pictured here with shopping guru Mary Portas at the market.
One of the town’s best-known landmarks, the wrought and cast-iron framework was originally an open-sided building with a glazed roof. In 1898, Ephraim Marks, one of the founders of Marks & Spencer, closed the sides of his grocery stall in the market hall to shield customers from the elements and within two years the entire market was enclosed.
