Estimated at £60-80, it sold at £3200. It is unusual for its form – mugs are more common but this 5in (13cm) high vessel has a spout – and is applied with a relief moulded fouled anchor which probably denotes the name of a tavern. Similar examples are known with a range of popular tavern signs.
The jug was catalogued as William III period on account of the impressed mark WR, although it may be a little later. Although the act governing the tavern trade originated in 1700, the WR excise mark was used throughout the 18th century.
