Richard Hamilton’s (1922-2011) 1972 print Release depicts Mick Jagger and art dealer Robert Fraser shying away from the paparazzi during their ride to court in 1967, handcuffed to each other in a prison van.
One of the artist’s most enduring works, it was based on a photograph taken by John Twine that appeared in the Daily Sketch newspaper.
This 2ft 3in x 2ft 10in (68 x 86cm) artist’s proof (one of 15) combines seventeen colour screens, two photographic black screens and an additional collage of die-cut silver accents.
For many years it resided in Cadaques, where the original owner befriended Hamilton during his frequent trips to the Spanish seaside town.
The print has since passed down through the family and remains in the original frame selected by Hamilton over 30 years ago. It is estimated at £30,000-50,000 in Sotheby’s Made in Britain sale on September 13 in London.
