Blaze-hit saleroom aims to relaunch
The owner of Jarrow Auction Rooms in Tyne and Wear is hoping to raise money to rebuild his business after it was destroyed by a fire last month.
Brian Cairns, who set up the auction room three years ago, said he will need raise £300,000 to start again.
The saleroom, in a former Methodist church on Bede Burn Road, was ravaged by fire in the early hours of Friday, November 24, and more than 40 firefighters fought the blaze.
Cairns is in talks with his insurance firm and structural surveyors are reviewing the situation at the church. He is also looking for a new temporary location.
He hopes to re-mortgage, use the insurance money that he might get and raise funds to rebuild the business.
Dutch Golden Age sets modern record
An auction house in a small Bavarian town has sold a Dutch Golden Age painting for more than 50 times estimate – setting a record for an artwork sold online in Germany.
An oil painting by Flanders-born painter Roeland Savery (1576-1639) was knocked down at €810,000 (£724,150) after bidding started at €15,000 at auction house Walter Ginhart.
Paradise, from 1625, was one of the artist’s many landscapes depicting animals, both fanciful and real, here shown in the peaceable kingdom.
The sale is not a record for Savery but it is a high price for an item sold online, coming via sales platform lot-tissimo.

Talk covers native woods in furniture
Regional furniture historian Dr Bill Cotton will give a ‘hands-on’ talk titled The importance of identifying native woods in vernacular furniture at Moore Allen & Innocent’s salerooms in Cirencester on December 12.
The two hour seminar (from 2-4pm) is hosted by NAVA.
Delegates are welcome to bring objects or small items of furniture along to the session for discussion with Cotton, whose published works include The English Regional Chair (1990).

Schindler archive comes to auction
A small personal archive of correspondence, photographs and personal effects once belonging to Emilie Schindler (1907-2001) carries an estimate of £600-700 at Lawrences of Crewkerne on December 8.
Emilie Pelzl, a Sudeten German, married Oskar Schindler (1908-74) in 1928 after a whirlwind romance.
Together they are credited with saving the lives of over 1000 Jews during the final years of the war, providing them immunity from the Nazis as employees in enamelware and munitions factories.
The Lawrences lot includes some 70 letters and cards, most (post-1987) expressing admiration for her role. One dated September 23, 1987, reads “I was very moved by your courageous self-sacrifice. More importantly, however, I thank you Frau Schindler, for having restored my faith in mankind. As a spiritual heir of those whom you saved, I wish you a very happy and healthy birthday.”
A group of family photographs, including one of Oskar Schindler mounting a horse, 1944, are accompanied by a series of presentation items including a small plated dish, engraved Oskar and Emilie Schindler.
The couple lived in Regensburg, Germany, until November 1949 before emigrating to Argentina. Bankrupt, Oskar Schindler returned to Germany in 1957, never to see his wife again.
The vendor of this collection knew Emilie towards the end of her life.
