Starting with President Harry Truman, Pape secured the signatures of 21 people (shown right) over the next decade including Eisenhower, British prime ministers Winston Churchill and Anthony Eden, three US secretaries of state, 13 US generals and Field Marshal Montgomery.

The book, a deluxe limited first edition, is number 555 of the 1426 copies printed and is bound with a copy of Eisenhower’s D-Day message to the troops, also signed by him.

Considering its travels – passing some 40 times through the post and crossing the Atlantic – the book is in remarkably good condition, says London book dealer Peter Harrington, who is selling it.

The book and an archive of all the correspondence that accompanied the signatures are for sale at £150,000.
