The signed 1908 pen ink and colour wash depicts a dozen unhappy figures sat around the Peter Pan author JM Barrie. The caption reads: Mr J.M. Barrie in a nursery – telling a story about a little boy who wished – oh, how he did wish! – to be a mother…
The 12 x 15in (31 x 39cm) drawing had pedigree, having been consigned from the collection of Beerbohm’s friend, the cartoonist Haro Hodson (b.1932). Against a £600-800 estimate, it soared to £6800, when it was hammered down to the trade.
