Overseas trade figures show some growth

SIGNS of slightly greater activity in the art market are contained in the overseas trade statistics for 1992 which show that total exports increased by about 1% and imports by 12%.

This is a reversal of the trend seen in 1991 when both exports and imports dropped by more than 35% on the previous year.

2016 was more like 1991 than 1992, with both the UK’s import and export figures dropping significantly, as shown in our story opposite page, top left.

Survey values European art market at £4.76 billion

THE FIRST ever Europe-wide report on the art and antiques market, launched at the opening of the Maastricht Fair last week, has established that the art and antiques business was worth a total of €6.9 billion (£4.76bn) in sales in 1998 and employed some 74,000 people.

After this first airing, the annual TEFAF report on the value of the art market launched each year at the Maastricht fair, is now a firmly-established and much-awaited event. This year sees a change of compiler and presenter as Prof Dr Rachel Pownall takes over from Dr Clare McAndrew.
