April, the first to be ordered, features young women in voluminous white dresses (a characteristic motif in Denis’ oeuvre) holding aloft baskets and floating in a blue sky.
The other two paintings were Lilac time (spring time) of 1896 and The Chausson Family of 1899. April was exhibited at the Salon des Independents from April to May 1894, after which it was installed in the ground-floor gallery of Chaussan’s house.
The painting will feature in the auction of paintings and decorative art held by Jack- Philippe Ruellan in Vannes, Brittany, on April 8. It is estimated at €300,000-500,000.
