The view of Port Mahon sold by Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood for £50,000 in 2011.
You stated that the artist’s auction record at £40,000 is held by Sotheby’s for a view of Valletta, Malta.
In fact, Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood sold an oil on canvas view of Port Mahon by Anton Schranz for £50,000 in our Maritime auction held on June 15, 2011 (see above).
That auction brought many people to our Exeter saleroom on the day, the main highlight being Schranz’s Mahon Harbour painting.
There was a great deal of pre-sale interest in the topographicallyaccurate view, with many recognising it even after the changes of the 200 years since – a period that spans the naval ships of the 1800s and the modern cruise ships seen today.
