Auctioneer Sophie Chapman identified the bowl, with enamel-style decoration and gilded rim, as early 20th century.

The cups had Qianlong marks to the base but Batemans did not posit any date for them.

The lot triggered intense interest, with bids coming down the phone and online before it sold in the room to a Chinese buyer at £10,500.
