In 1970, he was awarded the prestigious Order of Culture by the Japanese government.

This 9½ x 13in (24 x 33cm) woodcut of a reclining nude has been consigned from the family of a deceased lady who lived and travelled in the East during the 1960s.

This 18th century silver-mounted cowrie snuff box is believed to be only the second piece of Channel Islands silver mounted with a cowrie shell.

The 3¼in (8cm) long piece bears the initials MSBK and IH struck to the underside of the lid – a maker’s mark of an unknown Guernsey silversmith who flourished in the 18th century.

It is estimated at £1600-1800 in Martel Maides’ sale in Guernsey on September 6-7.
