The brooch is believed to have belonged to Victoria, Duchess of Kent (formerly Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld), who on her death in 1861 left her jewellery to her daughter, Queen Victoria. The brooch was later given by Victoria to her youngest daughter Princess Beatrice (later Princess Henry of Battenberg) on her 14th birthday.

The brooch was purchased by the vendor’s late father from a jeweller in Skipton during the 1940s.

A garnet and enamel brooch given to Princess Helena (Victoria’s third daughter) on her 24th birthday was offered for sale at Bonhams in 2011, bearing a similarly worded inscription in the same script.
