The premises, staffed by numismatists Max Tursi and Nicholas Mathioudakis, will initially focus on the coin market.

However, Heritage plans to hire more staff and expand into other categories in future. The premises will operate with a small inventory while displaying upcoming auction highlights in its windows.

‘Support for all categories’

Cristiano Bierrenbach, executive vice president of Heritage Auctions, said: “Nick and Max will assist us in growing our world and ancient coin and world currency auctions. Their general knowledge and customer service skills open up London and the UK for all of our other categories. The London office will provide support for all of Heritage’s categories.”

Despite Brexit looming on the horizon, Bierrenbach said London will remain as “one of the financial centres of the world, as well as a major hub of the art and collectables market”.

Tursi, who studied in Italy, has previously worked at Christie’s Rome, Astarte in Lugano, Spink & Son and Classical Numismatic Group in London. He specialises in ancient, European medieval and modern coins. Mathioudakis’ areas of expertise include ancient coins, paper money, particularly of the Middle East, European medieval, Islamic and modern coins. In 2014 the pair opened London Coin Galleries and operated from 6 Shepherd Street.

The premises has now been rebranded Heritage Auctions and is the latest international expansion for the Dallas firm which also has operations in Paris, Geneva, Amsterdam and Hong Kong.
