An 18th century Qing jade bowl and cover carries an estimate of £10,000-20,000 at Mallams sale of Chinese, Japanese, Indian and Islamic art in Cheltenham on October 25-26. It is part of a group of hardstones and Peking glass purchased by a Swedish collector – the grandfather of the vendor – in the inter-war years. Scandinavian collectors were among the strongest buyers of Chinese art in the first half of the 20th century led by the Crown Prince of Sweden, later King Gustav VI Adolf of Sweden, whose celebrated collection formed from the 1920s makes up the Museum of Far Eastern Art in Stockholm. The jades offered by Mallams were bought mainly from established London dealers in the 1930s.

Members of the Association of Accredited Auctioneers, or ‘Triple A’ as this group of leading UK regional fine art auctioneers is known, will be at the Rountree Tryon gallery in Mayfair on the afternoon of November 5 to show highlights from forthcoming sales. Stansted Mountfitchet saleroom Sworders will bring this 18th century famille rose ‘jue’ cup made in imitation of an archaic bronze. It was previously in the collection of Erik Nordström (1884-1971) who took up the role of Postmaster General of the Royal Chinese General Post Office, Shanghai, in 1910. After a career in China of over 35 years, he eventually returned to Sweden in 1948, a period of time in which he had experienced the Chinese revolution, the Japanese invasion and both World Wars. The jue carries an estimate of £2000-3000 and is for sale on November 7.

They are (from left to right), an underglaze blue decorated Jaijing (1522-66) ‘yuhuchunping’ (estimate £5000-8000); a Kangxi (1662-1722) imperial underglaze copper red water pot or pingguo zun (estimate £5000-8000) and a Wanli (1573-1620) imperial wucai ‘dragon’ dish with a paper label for Sidney L Moss (estimate £1000-1500). The vase stands at just over 12in (31cm) high.
