A roll-call of top designer names from the past century, including Alberto and Diego Giacometti, Gio Ponti and François-Xavier Lalanne, features in a 171-lot sale of modern design at Phillips London on April 26.

Consigned from a Belgian private collection is Mouton by François-Xavier Lalanne (1927-2008).

The French sculptor achieved significant recognition for his flock of sheep, Pour Polyphème, which he produced for the 1966 Salon de la Jeune Peinture exhibition.

Combining the artist’s humour with his love of the surreal, Lalanne intended these works to be used as furniture.

This 2ft 9in x 18in (83 x 45cm) sheep dates to c.1992 and is guided at £150,000-200,000.
