An inscribed presentation copy containing two folding plans, together with five litho plates and six autotypes from photographs, sold for £300 in a Thomson Roddick (17.5% buyer’s premium) Carlisle sale of March 21.
The yacht, seemingly called Nyanza, belonged to a friend and fellow chemist, James Young, and in the same year the two men visited St Kilda on a voyage that Smith later wrote about in Good Words and in a privately printed pamphlet of 1879.
