Running from April 19-May 12, the show coincides with the LOPF.
British-born Leighton (1898-1989) wrote and illustrated books praising the virtues of the countryside and the people who worked the land. Trained at the Slade and later the Central School of Arts and Crafts, she relocated to the US in the 1930s.
The proofs included in Abbott & Holder’s show were given by the artist to Hilaire Belloc (1870-1953), who published Woodcuts – examples of the work of Clare Leighton in 1930. They were passed down to one of Belloc’s descendants unmounted and in a small folder.
Raverat (1885-1957) was also trained at the Slade and became a founding member of the Society of Wood Engravers. Regarded as one of the first truly modern wood engravers, she developed a painterly style influenced by the works of the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists. Raverat’s output was prolific and she illustrated a number of books.
The works of hers on show at Abbott & Holder are from an album of proofs that she compiled and gave to her daughter.
