The auction house offered the undated 16 x 20in (41 x 51cm) oil on canvas on July 11. Lucy Homer, cataloguer and auctioneer at Henry Adams, said it attracted “a great deal of interest, particularly from Norfolk”. Consigned from a local private estate, it took £7000 against a conservative £1000-1500 guide.

This followed the £11,000 paid in April for a larger oil of cows in pasture, consigned from a different estate. The artist’s impressionistic depictions of pastoral landscapes, often of East Anglia, are evidently holding up on the secondary market, although overall expectations and prices are lower than a decade ago.

Portuguese realism

The same sale also yielded a multi-estimate sum for an oil attributed to Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro (1857-1929), the Portuguese Realist painter.

Consigned from another local private estate, the 18 x 22in (45 x 55cm) oil on canvas is believed to depict Jaime Batalha Reis (1847- 1934), a Portuguese agronomist and diplomat.

Attracting interest from abroad, particularly Portugal, it sold for £6000 against a £700-1000 guide.
