Composite comes together
Standing tall among the suits of armour in Hermann Historica’s (25% buyer’s premium) sale in May was a composite suit of Augsburg type which sold for €38,000 (£29,230).
Made up from elements of period armour dating to the second half of the 16th century, it was topped by a helm with a ridged skull forged as a single piece and the boldly ridged breast plate was fitted with a hinged lance rest.
Saints marching in
At Thomas Del Mar (24% buyer’s premium) on June 27 ahigh-quality 19th century replica of a north Italian field armour of c.1560 reached £8000. It is etched overall with bands and borders of foliate scrolls and decorated on the pauldrons with cartouches portraying what appear to be St George and the Dragon and St Joan.
