The 10 x 16in (25 x 40cm) work, Skating Bassenthwaite, was painted by clerk-turned-painter Edward Horace Thompson (1879-1949), who specialised in and produced a great number of Lake District scenes.
According to the Art Sales Index, this is among the highest prices achieved for the artist in recent years and suggests it could be a record.
