In 1876 Lewis Carroll had 140 copies of 'The Hunting of the Snark. An Agony in 8 Fits' specially bound in gilt decorated cloth for presentation. This inscribed red version was sold at auction by Thomas Miller for £2200.

On January 30 another example was sold by Thomas Miller (20% buyer’s premium) for £2200. The Newcastle copy was one of the more frequently seen 100 red versions, but not only was it inscribed 'Mary Louisa Ambrose from the Author. May 29, 1876', it also had the front and back sections of the typographic dust jacket tucked inside.
