A watercolour of the Madonna by French Symbolist painter Edgard Maxence (1871-1954) is guided at £1000-1500 in the picture sale at Dreweatts on July 18 in Donnington Priory, Berkshire.

The 14½ x 11¼in (37 x 29cm) pencil and watercolour is signed and bears a label to the verso for Walker Bagshawe Fine Art, London dealer of British and European paintings.

Maxence’s work was influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites during the 19th century, and often depicted religious scenes with a focus on female subjects.
