1. South Wales coal miners were almost exclusively the subject of local artist Valerie Ganz (1936-2015). This signed 18 x 12½in (45 x 32cm) gouache more than doubled its top guide at Rogers Jones & Co on July 7 in Cardiff.

2. The pictures of Sicilian-Canadian painter Joseph Giunta (1911-2002) rarely appear at auction outside Canada. This framed 17 x 21in (44 x 54cm) oil on board of a snowy Sainte Marguerite in Quebec nearly doubled its top guide at Batemans of Stamford in Lincolnshire on July 7.

3. The ruins of Rievaulx Abbey in North Yorkshire are the subject of this 10 x 12in (25 x 30cm) paper on board by prolific English painter Stanley Orchart (1920-2005). It got away on bottom estimate at W&H Peacock on July 6 in Bedford.
