This 17th century needlework casket above will feature in Tennants’ Spring Fine Art Sale on March 17 in Leyburn, North Yorkshire. Dating from c.1670, the rectangular box is decorated in raised stumpwork embroidery.
On the top are two figures, thought to be Charles II and Catherine of Braganza, standing either side of a stylised vase of flowers with heraldic animals and tulips. The couple are repeated on the front panel watched over by cupid and populated with classical scenes to the sides. Estimate £6000-8000.
A market-fresh collection of portraits from a Norfolk estate will go under the hammer at Cheffins of Cambridge on March 7-8.
The 15-lot group has come from the Birkbeck family, who lived at Westacre High House for 250 years before selling it to sculptor Anthony Gormley in 2010.
The highlight of the collection is a portrait of Sir Robert Walpole, Britain’s first prime minister and chancellor of the exchequer, by Charles Jervas (c.1675-1739).
The picture is thought to date to 1725 and was painted as a gift for Walpole’s sister Susan Hamond, whose family lived at Westacre High House. It carries an estimate of £7000-10,000.

This late 19th century ornate French silver cased clock by F Le Grand of Dieppe, above, has been consigned to John Nicholson’s sale in Surrey on March 22.
Inset with sapphires, emeralds, diamonds, pearls and a lapis base, the 9in (23cm) high clock comes in its original leather folding case and is estimated at £10,000-15,000.
