Depicting a side canal in Venice, this signed 2ft 2in x 14in (66 x 36cm) oil on board by Peter Kuhfeld (b.1952) tipped over top estimate at Mallams in Abingdon on April 9. The English painter is best known for his figurative works and royal family commissioned portraits, but his Venetian views are a popular and affordable alternative.

Animal painter Mick Cawston (1959-2006) has grown in popularity on the secondary market in recent years, with this 12½ x 12in (32 x 31cm) watercolour study of a hare, signed and dated 93, selling for three times its guide at Greenslade Taylor Hunt in Taunton on April 5.

As well as painting portraits, Wulfrunian artist George Phoenix (1863-1935) executed copious views of his native city during the late Victorian era. This 3ft 4in x 2ft 3in (1.02m x 69cm) oil on canvas, Market Day, Wolverhampton, more than doubled its bottom guide at Fieldings Auctioneers in Stourbridge, West Midlands, on April 21.
