Auction rooms across France put on this annual initiative to encourage the public, especially those unfamiliar with the auction process, to cross the threshold of their local saleroom.

The idea is to see what is going on and find out about the process and the role of the auctioneer. Last year 130,000 visitors took up this opportunity.

This year the emphasis is on the Journées d’Expertise, or free valuation days, that many firms are holding over the weekend. Visitors can bring along their attic finds and family heirlooms for identification and valuation.

In France, especially outside Paris, auctions are often held at the weekend so many of the participants will also be staging sales at the same time.

Pictured above is the promotional poster for this year.
