During the 1850s Frère travelled widely through Greece, Malta, Egypt and Turkey. He was captivated by the beauty of Egypt, its light and the archaeological ruins and he established a studio in Cairo where he worked for several years, gaining the respect and admiration of the viceroy who elevated him to the rank of bey.

On his return to Paris his Orientalist landscapes were in high demand from Parisian collectors and royalty.

This work was exhibited in the 1885 staging of the Paris Salon, where the artist enjoyed considerable success throughout his lifetime. Today his works feature in museums around the world.

The 4ft x 5ft 2in (1.21 x 1.57m) oil on canvas comes to auction from a private Spanish collection and is estimated to sell for €30,000.
