A pair of ormolu candlesticks by Pierre-Philippe Thomire offered at Duran Subastas in Madrid, estimated at €8500.
Having initially trained as a sculptor, Thomire turned to the more lucrative profession of bronze caster and he became the leading Parisian gilt metal manufacturer and gilder of the early 19th century.
At the height of his business he employed more than 600 people and his work represents some of the finest examples of the Empire style.
He enjoyed the patronage of the Emperor Napoleon, who made him ciseleur de l’empereur (engraver to the emperor).
The 2ft 6in (75cm) high candlesticks are signed on the base THOMIRE A PARIS and are estimated to sell for €8500.
