The oil on canvas, measuring 14½ x 12½in (37 x 32cm) and signed lower left, depicts the young Noemi Sutter and was painted in 1885 when she was just three.
Anker, who studied at Charles Gleyre’s studio in Paris, was a regular exhibitor at the Paris Salon. Portraits of children were a particular speciality – he is known to have produced around 250 examples. Noemi’s portrait comes direct from the family of the sitter and has never before been on the market. It has an estimate of SFr80,000-120,000.
