Two rare examples of 18th century Worcester porcelain are among the highlights in Tennants’ Autumn Fine Art Sale on November 17.
While the majority of ‘First Period’ Worcester pieces were made in a colour scheme of blue and white, it is the Chinese-inspired famille verte design and colours scheme in enamels that decorates these plates.
The simple, shallow shapes also indicate that they were among the first productions of the factory, probably made c.1752. The plates (one pictured above) are being offered with an estimate of £5000-7000 each.
This Naval General Service Medal 1793-1840 with two clasps for Trafalgar and St Sebastian was awarded to Edward Knapman. As a midshipman, Knapman served on board HMS Spatiate under Sir Francis Laforey at the Battle of Trafalgar.
He was wounded in the leg and arm and subsequently received a gratuity from the Patriotic Fund.
Promoted to lieutenant in 1812, he was awarded his second clasp when placed in command of gunboat no.16 by Captain Jas Bissett of the Royal Sovereign during the siege of St Sebastian. This medal is estimated at £5000-7000 in Plymouth auction house Eldreds’ Antiques and Art sale on November 20.
