Cityscape – Sold for £800
Trevor Grimshaw (1947-2001) is celebrated for his black and grey graphite portrayal of post-industrial Britain in northern towns. This trademark 7 x 6½in (18 x 16cm) townscape drawing from 1984 sold for a mid-estimate £800 at Capes Dunn in Stockport on October 2.
Marine scene – Sold for £800
Brothers John Cantiloe Joy and William Joy were 19th century marine painters from Norwich who spent much of their careers together, often making it difficult to tell their work apart. This 12 x 18in (31 x 46cm) watercolour of a man-o-war and other vessels, signed Joy but catalogued as by William Joy (1803-67), sold within estimate for £800 at TW Gaze of Diss in Norfolk on September 29.
Indigenous portraits – Sold for £420
Maung Su Yatanabon (1903-65) painted the indigenous people of Myanmar (formerly Burma) in the 1930s. Today, his meticulous studies are also a historical record of a vanishing culture. With realistically detailed features, these three watercolours sold for over eight times their guide at 3420 during Clevedon Salerooms’ sale in Bristol on October 4.
Iranian painting of wild boars – Estimate at £300-400
A Qajar painting of a group of wild boars features at the Roseberys London auction of Islamic and Indian Arts on October 22. The Qajars were a Turkmen tribe that held ancestral lands in present-day Azerbaijan when it was part of Iran. This painting from the 19th century or earlier depicts four boars running in a treed landscape within a pale pink border decorated in gold with various other animals. Measuring 7.5 x 13.5in (19 x 34.5cm) it is estimated at £300-400.
Miss Trimmer – Estimated at £60-90
Samuel de Wilde (1751-1832) was an English portraitist of Dutch descent who was famed for his theatrical paintings. His exhibited his pictures at the Royal Academy and had many of his portraits printed in publications such as the Monthly Mirror. A small portrait of Miss Trimmer is offered at Bishop & Miller Auctioneers’ sale of Art & Antiques with Asian Art on October 20 in Suffolk. It bears a gallery label to the back for Leger Galleries, 13 Old Bond Street, and has an estimate of £60-90.
Derbyshire landscape – Estimated at £600-800
A scene of a lane near Idridgehay, Derbyshire, signed and dated 1907, is offered at Bamfords’ three-day art and antiques sale starting on October 24. It is the work of George Turner (1841-1910), sometimes known as ‘Derbyshire’s John Constable’, who became a professional painter and art teacher after an earlier career as a tailor. He lived in Derbyshire all his life, moving to Idridgehay shortly before his death. This oil on canvas measures 20 x 16in (51 x 41cm) and has an estimate of £600-800.
