From an edition of six, the 5ft 8in (1.73m) high sculpture on a rectangular marble plinth is typical subject matter for the Fulham-born artist.
Harpley’s first major sale was Little Girl, c.1956, a statue of a seated school girl, now in the Museum of New Zealand. At auction, a high price for a 1984 sculpture came at Tennants in March last year when Singapore Girl on a Swing made £26,000.
Here, on July 20, the bronze fetched £16,000 against a £8000-12,000 estimate.
Another sculpture, nearly half the size, depicting a girl mid-skip holding an umbrella from an edition of nine, sold at Bonhams in 2015 for £6500.
