This unique set of medals covers a life of service in the Royal Navy which began in 1893, with a Queen’s South Africa medal for service aboard the steam sloop HMS Beagle.

First World War service followed aboard battleships including HMS Warspite at the Battle of Jutland in 1916, for which he received the DSO and Order of St Stanislas, 2nd class, by Russia in 1917.

Walwyn was director of gunnery at the Admiralty from 1924 and later took command of Valiant. Promoted to rear admiral in 1928, he was awarded the CBE.

Appointed director of the Royal Indian Marine, he was made a Knight Commander of the Order of the Star of India. From 1936 as Governor of Newfoundland he was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George.

Lawrences describes this group as “a truly remarkable collection of medals that reflect a long and wide ranging life of service and achievement” in the RN.

This group of medals is estimated at £25,000-30,000.
