Offered at Brightwells (22% buyer’s premium) on March 20, the 14 x 18in (35.5 x 45.5cm) oil on panel showing a typical Cooper scene of farm animals in a meadow, had remained in the same family since it was purchased for the princely sum of £135 (then around £14,000) from the Bristol gallery of Frost & Reed in 1914.

Given a tentative £3000-5000 estimate reflecting today’s diminished demand for traditional Victorian art, it was bought by a private buyer from Lincolnshire for £5000.

A comparable oil painting on panel, In the Meadows at Noon, sold at Christie’s South Kensington in November 2012 for £5250 (with fees).
