The 14 x 18in (35 x 46cm) oil on canvas, signed and dated 1835, depicts the Devonport-London mail coach – nicknamed Quicksilver due to its speed – passing the Star and Garter Hotel at Old Kew Bridge in London. It sold for £14,000 in Haslemere on October 30.

A number of Pollard’s early 19th century oils have sold for five-figure sums at John Nicholson’s over the past few years. Much of the group appears to have originated from a single private collection assembled during a peak period for the market during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
