The 21in (52cm) long piece, with a pierced body held aloft by rams’ head monopodia with hairy feet joined by swags, was made by Edward Barnard & Sons, London, in 1912.
The 28oz piece with some surface scratches and minor dents was estimated at £4000-6000 but finally went to the London trade at £13,500.
Bacchanalian pleasure
More table magnificence was on offer the same day at Reeman Dansie (20% buyer’s premium) in Colchester in the form of the tureen and cover, above, engraved with the coat of arms of the Baron de Rothschild.
The 8¼in (21cm), 26oz tureen with gilt interior featured parcel gilt panels, cast vine borders with a Bacchanalian mask, twisted branch handles mounted with lizards and a foot cast with winged cherub heads and floral scrolls.
Made by Maurice A Paris, c.1860, and with the 950 standard mark, the tureen was pitched at £1000-1500 but sold at £4600.
