Putting theory into practice, he included 51 pieces in the 280-lot Modern Made sale on November 14 and emphasised his belief by scattering them through the catalogue rather than as a separate section.

Most well-known names were represented – the likes of Walter Keeler (b.1942) with a salt-glazed, 9in (23cm) tall jug at £600; Peter Hayes (b.1946) with a 2ft 4in (71cm) 1989 rectangular sculptural form with raku glaze at £1500 and Monica Young (1929-2004) with a huge 4ft 10in (1.48km) tall stoneware coiled vessel which trebled expectations at £2800.
Rie accessibility
Six pieces by Lucie Rie underlined the accessibility of the grande dame of studio ceramics. Prices ranged from £700 for a 3¼in (8cm) high manganese glazed bowl with extensive restoration to £7500 for a c.1980, 4in (10cm) tall footed bowl with brown glaze, red band and sgraffito white lines.
Top-sellers came from Jennifer Lee (b.1956), whose status was confirmed when she won the 2018 Loewe Craft Prize.
At L&T, two very similar 7in (17.5cm) tall stoneware and mixed clay asymmetric vessels with tilted rim form, one from 1984 and one from 1988, doubled the estimates, selling to collectors at £12,000 each.
