A 17th century portrait of Jean Villan top by an unknown artist was one of 25 lots from the collections of the Château de Pontchartrain offered at Sotheby’s on November 19.
The 2ft 6in x 2ft (77 x 62cm) work bears an inscription identifying the sitter and his age lower centre: JEAN VILLAIN NÉ EN 1564 MT EN 1641. It sold for €3200 (£2735).
Le Lion Bourgeois was a typical humorous caricature by Jean Ignace Grandville (1803-47). The 11½ x 7½in (29 x 19cm) pen, ink and watercolour sold for €2600 (£2220) at Aguttes on November 20.
Artcurial’s sale of Old Master and 19th century paintings included a series of eight black and red chalk portraits of elderly sitters applied to wood panels by the 17th century artist Nicholas Lagneau. This 16 x 11in (41 x 28cm) example depicting a smiling lady realised €2800 (£2395).
