Many similar pieces were made at the Sapperton workshops by blacksmith Alfred Bucknell in Gimson’s lifetime and beyond.

The pierced steel sconces at the Cirencester sale on January 11 were pitched at £300-500. There were some areas of rust, loss of paint and scratches but all commensurate with age.

While the auctioneers could not guarantee a line back to Sapperton, bidders were willing to speculate and the sconces went to a local dealer at £5800.
