The exhibition, which runs until March 15, focuses on the sketches that Fergusson completed while living in Paris.
Born in Edinburgh, he was the most international of the Scottish Colourists. During his life across the Channel he met many of the leading painters of his day, such as Derain and Matisse, and was heavily influenced by the art that surrounded him there.
He is best known for his portraits of women, including many of his wife, the dancer Margaret Morris. The drawings on show at Browse & Darby were acquired by a friend of the artist either directly from him or Morris. Many have never previously been exhibited.
“These drawings, the majority of which are head studies, are his ideas for paintings,” says the gallery’s Joshua Darby. “He would have sat and looked at people in cafés. There are many of Morris and many of the dancers at the schools she set up. These are an intimate way of looking at how he observed people.”
Works are available for £1200-4500. The show is in association with Alexander Meddowes Fine Art.
