Jean Coene, the so-called ‘Master of the Paris Entries’, was a prolific 16th century painter of miniatures who was active in Paris for the French court under Louis XII and Francis I.
This c.1510–20 illuminated leaf from a Book of Hours above is attributed to Coene’s workshop. The animal-vellum leaf features 22 lines of handwritten gothic text, a large, liquid gold D and a panel border of geometric shapes filled with acanthus and floral motifs, including red roses (the symbol of martyrdom) and columbine (the symbol of the holy spirit).
It is priced at £495 from London dealership Ancient Art.
This complete 37-piece double-sided Victorian wooden dissected jigsaw puzzle above was issued to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in 1887.
Published by W & AK Johnston, geographical and educational printer and publisher in Edinburgh, it depicts a map of the British empire on one side and coloured portraits of the kings and queens of England, from William I onwards, on the other.
It comes in its original wooden box and is priced at £385 from J Collins and Son in Bideford, Devon.
