Eight-day Cumbrian clock by John Sanderson of Wigton offered for £7750 from dealers Northern Clocks of Worsley, Manchester.
However, this eight-day Cumbrian clock includes not just the name of the maker John Sanderson of Wigton to the dial but also that of the clock’s first owner, one Mr John Skelton.
Two brass plaques to the 6ft 11in (2.06m) oak case are engraved with the date 1741 and the initials JMS. Sanderson (1671-1748), who is believed to have been apprenticed to John Ogden of Bowbridge, created mainly 30-hour clocks, with eight-day movements something of a rarity.
This example has an unusual dial without spandrels to the corners and subsidiary dials for a moon phase and date register. Northern Clocks of Worsley, Manchester, is asking £7750.
