Starting as a commercial illustrator before enrolling in the Art Institute of Chicago in 1907, Benton’s large-scale works often depicted everyday people in rural and industrial settings.

Titled Whiskey Going to the Rackhouse to Age, this large oil on board from 1945 was commissioned by Imperial Whiskey for an advertisement and measures 3ft 3in in x 3ft (99 x 92cm).

Consigned from the collection of Maker’s Mark Distillery in Loretto, Kentucky, it is for sale in Hindman’s American and European Fine Art sale on October 17 estimated at $800,000-1.2m.
