Dealer Andrew Stephens of Carse Antiques, which offers the piece for £950, says that the unique piece would have been made for someone who lived in a country house – with many servants available to carry it. The lift is designed so that it sits on the steps with both sets of handles off the ground, making it easy to move.
The mahogany chair is made with a swab cushion and is offered in good condition with no damage. The upholstery is red suede, which is believed to have been done in the early 20th century.
Carse Antiques, based in Rait, is one of the many Scottish dealers attending the fair nearby in Perthshire. Organised by Galloway Antiques Fairs, it runs from March 1-3 and hosts exhibitors such as Cathedral Antiques of Fortrose bringing furniture, Hilary Farquharson of Angus with books, Julia Drinkhall offering country house antiques and decorative items, and John AW Briggs of Stonehaven with Oriental rugs and carpets.
The event takes place in the main staterooms of the palace. Now in its 24th year, it is held twice annually and also features jewellery, fine art, porcelain and more from dealers across the UK. The autumn edition is on November 8-10.
The Bath Decorative & Antiques Fair holds its usual Trade Preview on March 7 from noon-5pm followed by a drinks party celebrating its 30th year at the Pavilion from 5-6.30pm. Friends of the fair over time are welcome to join following the preview.
