In the 1880s he travelled extensively through the Caucasus at the behest of the Russian government. It was there that he found the theme that was to keep him employed for much of his artistic career.

His depictions of life in the steppes were particularly realistic and found favour with buyers throughout Russia and the rest of Europe.

Nowadays, Russian collectors regularly play high prices for his paintings and Van Ham in Cologne can probably expect them to take part in the sale on May 16 when Roubaud’s Rest on the Journey, a characteristic camp scene (19in x 2ft 5in, or 47 x 76cm), comes up for sale. It is expected to bring €40,000-60,000.
